The Prompt That Made My AI Stop Being Polite
Most people use AI to get answers faster.
That's fine. But it's also the lowest possible use of the tool.
The moment I stopped asking AI for information and started asking it for perspective, something shifted. Not immediately. Not dramatically. Slowly, and then all at once.
This post is about one prompt. What it does, why it works, and why you'll get a mediocre answer the first time you use it.

The prompt - Copy paste it
“If you were me, what is the ONE small daily or weekly action you would do consistently for the next 3–5 years that would quietly compound and eventually put me far ahead of most people in my field?”
Constraints:
The action must be realistically sustainable alongside a busy medical career
It should have asymmetrical long-term returns
It should exploit current technological or societal shifts
It should fit someone who is strong in thinking, teaching, writing, and systems-building
Avoid generic advice like “network more,” “post daily,” or “work harder”
Focus on leverage, positioning, and compounding
Consider second-order effects and hidden advantages
Think globally, not just locally
Include why most people will NOT do this consistently
Include what opportunities this action could unlock after 5–10 years
Include specific implementation details:
exact workflow
tools
cadence
format
examples
what to avoid
metrics that actually matter
Include psychological barriers and how to overcome them
Include what this person should ignore completely despite common advice
Be intellectually rigorous and realistic, not motivational
At the end, provide:
The single sentence version of the strategy
A 30-minute-per-day implementation model
A “why this compounds” explanation
The biggest risk of NOT doing it
A prediction of where this could place the person professionally in 10 years if executed consistently.
Why this prompt works when others don't
Notice what it isn't doing.
It's not asking "what should I do with my career." It's not asking for a list of productivity tips. It's not asking the AI to motivate you.
It's doing something more specific: it's asking the AI to step inside your life, with your actual constraints, and tell you the one thing worth doing that you're probably not doing.
The rules at the bottom are not decorative. They're the part that prevents the AI from giving you a polished, useless answer. "No lists" forces a real decision. "Something most people aren't doing" rules out the obvious. "Name the failure modes" means the AI can't just be optimistic at you.
The result is an answer that feels less like advice and more like a conversation with someone who has thought harder about your situation than you currently have time to.
The catch nobody mentions
Here's the part that will frustrate you if I don't say it directly.
The first time you use this prompt, the answer will probably be good but not great. Thoughtful but slightly generic. It will fit you, loosely, the way a well-made suit fits someone who wasn't measured for it.
That's not the AI failing. That's the AI working with what it has.
If you've been using ChatGPT or Claude or whichever tool you prefer for three weeks, it doesn't know you yet. It knows the category of person you are. Clinician. Academic. Content creator. It will give you the category answer.
Which tool you use matters far less than how long you've been using it honestly. Regular use. Real problems. Arguments when it's wrong. Corrections when it misses your context. That history is what eventually makes the answer personal instead of plausible.
Two months of consistent use before you ask this question. That's the honest prerequisite.
How to build your version
Replace my details with yours. Keep the structure, keep the rules, change everything inside them.
Three things your version needs:
Your actual role and context. Not your LinkedIn headline. Where you actually work, what you're actually constrained by, what you're building on the side.
Your real ambitions. Not the polished version. The one you'd say to a mentor at 11pm after a long day. Legacy. Money. Recognition. All of it is valid. Say it.
The rules, unchanged. One thing only. Under 20 minutes a day. Something others aren't doing. The compounding mechanism. The failure modes. These rules are what separate a sharp answer from a motivational poster.
Then paste it into the AI tool you use most. Not the best one. The one that already has some history with how you think.

What I got back
When I ran this prompt after months of regular use with enough context built up, the answer was this:
Read one abstract from a field completely outside transfusion medicine every morning. Ten minutes. That's it.
The reasoning the AI gave: my real competition isn't other transfusion medicine doctors. It's the person who borrowed an idea from supply chain logistics or behavioral economics and applied it to blood banking before anyone else looked there. The ThirdThinker identity demands a third source. You cannot build a third perspective reading only the first two.
It also named the failure mode: the risk is collecting interesting ideas without ever connecting them back to something I'm actually building. Curiosity without output is just consumption.
That last part stung a little. It was correct.
The bigger point
This prompt is not magic. No prompt is.
What it is, is a structured way of asking a question most of us never ask clearly: given everything I'm working with and everything I'm working toward, what is the one thing I should actually be doing that I'm not?
Most people never ask this question at all. They stay busy. They stay useful. They stay reactive.
The ones who ask it, and ask it specifically, with real constraints and real stakes in the question, tend to get answers worth sitting with.
Build your prompt. Use your tool. Ask the question.
Then do the thing it tells you to do.
